Webtoon – A Very Popular Art In Korea
If you ever wonder why Koreans are hypnotized in their phones while traveling, well the answer I think is, they are probably reading some Webtoon. It became a very popular art in Korea and it’s quickly spreading around the world.
One of the most popular things in Korea, are Webtoons. Everywhere, in the subway, in the train or even walking in the streets they are reading some Webtoon. It’s true I saw myself several times. Young people usually spend their time while traveling, watching this very short and fast graphic novels.
The first time I saw a Korean deeply immerse in this kind of comic style of drawing in his phone, I was so curious about. I kept staring the screen until I found out the main source, the website. Once I was in home I went to google it right away and….. Well let’s say that I’m one of the subscribers now. I totally became Korean!
Surprisingly the name was adopted first in Korea, actually the first website to boost the idea was Daum. Then Naver developed it to the level we know it now. The main characteristic, and the most important, about art is that is short and is published periodically, mostly weekly. You know, the Korean culture is all about being fast, so then comics, in order to be fast, became Webtoons. The digital platform saves a lot of time and money in printing (book or magazine). Then the result is that you have your favorite stories quick and now even in colors (usually printed versions of comics were in black and white to save ink money).

The Webtoon culture spreads really fast in almost all Asia. There are several artist from all around the world creating and publishing their own graphic novels. At the same time there are a lot of readers getting addicts to this new way of art, which is why now you can find them in different languages as well.

The most common platforms to find them are Line Webtoon (app and website) which you can find in Korean and in English and it’s for free! Daum for those who can read in Korean, if you’re lucky you can find a whole webtoon for free. Lezhin Comics (app and website) available in English and in Korean which has the most stylistic one but you have to pay for them. And some other options in English are Tapas (app and web) and Spottoon (web) which are free but less popular.

The main idea is to make a series of short stories with a simple aesthetic and possibly funny, however there are several graphic novels with influences of manhwa. Then they can have more than 200 episodes or they’re very aesthetic, besides the stories are very dramatic. The genres are usually romance, drama, horror, fantasy, comedy and slice of life. The last one completely fulfill the requirements mentioned above. They’re funny, simple and easy to understand. One of my favorite!
